Radoslaw Sikorski: Belarus provokes Poland

The military exercise of Russia and Belarus is a provocation against Poland.

Radoslaw Sikorski expressed this opinion on TVP Info channel commenting on a remark by Poland's former national defence minister Romuald Szeremietiew, Euroradio reports.

The latter said some days ago that Belarus and Russia were preparing a war with Poland. According to Szeremietiew the Russian-Belarusian military exercise titled West 2013 shows an intention to attack Poland.

“We take the issue very seriously. The latest military exercise of Russia and Belarus, West 2009, was a provocation against Poland. I wrote a letter to the NATO secretary general and NATO took a very clear position on the issue. The Polish troops will take part in the NATO military exercises in Poland this year. The army always prepares for the worst, for a war,” Radoslaw Sikorski said.

West 2013 strategic military exercise is scheduled for September. The appropriate decision was adopted by the ministers of defence of Belarus and Russia at a joint board of  the countries' defence ministries.

The two-stage exercise will take place at training areas in the two countries. The troops will train security of the “union state” and  practice the planning of the application of the Belarusian-Russian regional military force.

“The exercise will also involve the collective rapid responce forces of the Collective Security Treaty Organization. The command of the CSTO rapid responce forces will be set up in Belarus to coordinate their actions,” the Russian minister of defence said.
