Statkevich allowed to watch Belarusian TV in prison

Statkevich's cellmate thinks after Lukashenka's press conference his term must be considerably reduced for sharing a cell with such a “monster”.

Maryna Adamovich, the wife of political prisoner and former presidential candidate Mikalai Statkevich, passed a TV set to her husband in prison, Radio Racyja reports.

According to her, this opportunity appeared after softening confinement conditions for her husband in the Mahilou prison.

Statkevich can now watch television or listen to the radio in the cell, though there is no electricity during daytime.

The political prisoner listened to Alyaksandr Lukashenka's recent press conference, where he spoke about Statkevich.

“Mikalai writes that his cellmate, who was listening to the press conference on the radio, said he would demand to reduce his prison term because he shares a cell with such a 'monster'. Confinement conditions were eased for Mikalai after a year in prison,” Maryna Adamovich says. “He is allowed to walk for 90 minutes every day since January. He writes he uses all minutes and never refuses to go for a walk.”

Mikalai Statkevich is now allowed to have two visits per year. He can spend two minimum wages to buy goods in the prison shop. He can also receive one food parcel.

“He has not received food parcels for the last 14 months,” Maryna Adamovich says.

Mikalai Statkevich, a former presidential candidate, was charged with participating in mass disorders and sentenced to 6 years in prison for taking part in a protest rally against the rigged results of the presidential elections on December 19, 2010.

Lukashenka said during the recent press conference Statkevich was the only political prisoner and admitted he had been hurt by Statevkevich's pre-election speech on TV.
