Ales Byalyatski: My purchasing capacity declined sharply

Human rights activist Ales Byalyatski wrote about the latest news of his prison life in a letter home.

Many prisoners are ill in the Babruisk penal colony, where Byalyatski serves his sentence.

Ales Byalyatksi writes a sum of 100,000 rubles is not enough to buy all he needs in a prison shop, Radio Svaboda reports.

“Prices in the prison shop went up and my purchasing capacity declined,” Natallya Pinchuk cites the letter.

“I don't have changes. Continue to work. Working and sleeping take two thirds of the day,” Ales Byalyatski writes.

The head of Viasna human rights committee, Ales Byalyatski, was sentenced to 4.5 years in prison for alleged tax evasion. He spent the money on his foreign bank accounts on aid to victims of political repression.
