Venezuelan trade unions support fired employees of Mozyr oil refinery

Trade unions, political and public organisations of Venezuela protest against persecution of employees in Belarus.

More than 90 people appealed to the Belarusian authorities in connection with firing members of the independent trade union at the Mozyr oil refinery, the website Basta! reports.

“From the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela we express our solidarity with the activists of independent trade union of Belarus, who were fired by the plant managers. We consider that the management of the Mozyr oil refinery represented by general director Anatoly Kupryanau carries out a discriminative and anti-democratic policy against the employees who wanted to exercise their right to a trade union.

Firing five members of the independent trade union – Henadz Babrounikau, Tatsiana Babrovnikava, Uladzimir Kliuchnikau, Aliaksei Yermak and Ivan Shaban – is a flagrant abuse of power,” the appeal says.

Trade union members and activists from Venezuela note that such actions by the plant management seriously violate the legal rights of employees guaranteed by the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus and ILO's conventions ratified by Belarus.

“We demand to immediately stop persecuting employees of the Mozyr oil refinery for their membership in the trade union and to reinstate the fired members of the independent trade union,” they say.

We remind that five members of the independent trade union were recently fired. They are employees of the design and engineering department Henadz Babrounikau and Tatsiana Barovnikava, employees of workshop No. 2 Uladzimir Kliuchnikau, Aliaksei Yermak and Ivan Shaban. They faced disciplinary sanctions on far-fetched grounds. Employment agreements with them were not prolonged.

Members of the independent trade union believe the sanctions against the employees were too strict and violate the standards of the Labour Code. The independent trade union appealed to the plant management, a prosecutor's office and a court to protect the fired trade union members, but their attempts were not successful.
