Uladzimir Kanaplou spent three days in KGB jail

KGB arrested the former and current presidents of the National Olympic Committee.

KGB agents carried out an inspection on the case of a member of the organizational committee for the Ice Hockey World Championship Hienadz Alaksiejenka and the chairman of the national handball federation Uladzimir Kanaplou. They both were detained three days ago. Uladzimir Kanaplou was released today, while nothing has yet been reported of the fate of Hienadz Alaksiejenka.

The head of the information and public relations department of the Investigatory Committee of Belarus Paviel Traulka at first did not confirm, but did not either disprove the information on their detention, however in a while came up with a clear formulation: “The Investigatory Committee has no criminal case against Uladzimir Kanaplou”. This may mean that other agencies deal with the investigation.

They did not comment on this information at KGB.

Uladzimir Kanaplou is a childhood friend of the Belarusian ruler. He was Lukashenka’s aide back in the times when the future dictator was a member of the country’s Supreme Council. In 1995 he was elected to the parliament. Uladzimir Kanaplou headed the pro-government parliament faction Zhoda and was a member of the Supreme Court’s panel. After the referendum of 196 and the dissolution of the legitimate parliament he became the deputy chairman of the House of Representatives.

In October 2000 he again became a parliament member, representing Shklou constituency number 75. At the first extraordinary session of the new convocation of the House of Representatives he was elected the deputy chairman. From 2004 through 2007 he headed Lukashenka’s parliament.

Currently Uladzimir Kanaplou is the president of Belarus’ handball federation.

Hienadz Alaksiejenka was previously the chairman of Chavusy’s district council. He was elected to the Supreme Council of the Republic of Belarus of XIII convocation representing Chavysu constituency of Mahilou region. In 1996 he became a member of the House of Representatives. Was the deputy chairman of the Human Rights and National Relations Committee. In 2004 he was appointed Lukashenka’s aide on the issues of physical culture, sports and tourism development. He is currently the vice-president of the National Olympic Committee.

Both officials are representatives of the Shklou-Mahilou clan.
