Russian embassy demands a meeting with Baumgertner

Russia’s embassy in Minsk has sent a request to Belarus’ MFA for having a meeting with Uralkali’s director general, who is under house arrest.

“We have sent a request for getting permitted to meet Baumgertner. In accordance to the legislation the request has been sent to the MFA of Belarus. It will then be sent to laws enforcement agencies”, - the head of the consular department of Russia’s embassy in Minsk Igor Koryagin told the Interfax-Zapad news agency.

“We expect that this week the response may be received as to when the meeting will take place”, - Koryagin said.

He explained that this is a scheduled meeting. Baumgertner himself did not ask for a meeting with consular staff of the embassy. But there is a procedure, according to which consular staff may meet a citizens of the country under an investigation at least once in two month. “Once there is a procedure, we should stick to it”, - the representative of Russia’s embassy in Minsk highlighted.

Koryagin also added that Baumgertner’s mother was still in Minsk.
