Brest ideologists scared by Bulak-Balakhovich

The Brest authorities banned a concert of the project Tuzin.Nemaula.

The city authorities represented by deputy head of the city executive committee Henadz Barysiuk and head of the ideological department Alla Starykevich refused to permit a concert after weeks of negotiations, tuzin.fm reports.

The concert was scheduled for December 15 in the local Culture Centre. It was planned to screen a Belarusian silent film by Uladzimir Korsh-Sablin accompanied by Re1ikt band that composed music for the movie. The concert was agreed on with head of the cultural department of the Brest regional executive committee Siarhei Panasiuk, who was ready to give a venue for the event.

However, the city's ideological department didn't agree to permit the concert. The department head Alla Starykevich asked about the rights for the film. The organisers asked representatives of Gosfilmofond, Russia's film foundation that keeps the movie, to send a letter to Brest saying they support the project and don't contest the rights. Alla Starykevuch then said she had questions about ideology. She worried the film was made about Stanislau Bulak Balakkhovich and members of the council of the Belarusian People's Republic. Ideologists said unofficially they were afraid of politics, so they didn't want to permit the event.

The city officials didn't agree to approve the concert even after a phone call from a representative the Ministry of Culture, Uladzimir Lisouski. The project Tuzin.Nemaula was presented during the latest Listapad film festival, which was held under the aegis of the Ministry of Culture.

Organisers received the final rejection two days before the planned concert.
