Political prisoner Autukhovich in pre-diabetic state

Mikalai Autukhovich has a high blood sugar level.

Charter97.org learnt it from Aleh Vouchak, a former prosecution investigator and head of the organisation Legal Assistance to Citizens.

“I learnt from a phone call that our second complaint to the prosecutor general had been resent to the prosecutor's office of the Hrodna region. There's the question about the soonest medical tests and a medical examination of Mikalai Autukhovich. There's a decision of doctors that he should undergo medical tests and an examination to decide whether he needs dental implants or not,” the lawyer noted.

The human rights defender says that according to the latest blood test, the blood sugar level was 8 mmol/L.

“Mikalai has never had such a high blood sugar level. It can lead to different health problems, including diabetes. Autukhovich's health is getting worse. I am afraid he won't be allowed to have a prosthetic surgery. He hasn't had a full medical examination yet,” Aleh Vouchak said.

The normal blood sugar level for an adult is from 3.89 to 5.83 mmol/L (fingerstick testing). A normal fasting blood glucose level is less than 6 mmol/L, the glucose level of more than 7 mmol/L means a person has diabetes. A high blood glucose level is called hyperglycemia. It is caused by diabetes, endocrine disorders, pancreatic tumors, chronic liver disease and chronic kidney disease. A patient is diagnosed with diabetes after just one blood test if he or she have clear symptoms, or if two blood tests performed on different days show a high glucose level in the absence of symptoms.
