Plays about Belarusian dream to be shown om Freedom Day

25 playwrights submitted their plays to the international project Belarusian Dream Theater.

Short plays about Belarus will be shown on March 25, 2014, in Australia, Hungary, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Georgia, Italy, Canada, Norway, Poland, the US (California, New York and Vermont), Ukraine and Belarus.

The project was launched to support the freedom of expression in Belarus. All playwrights, directors and actors involved in the project work for free, BelaPAN reports.

The protect was initiated by Brendan McCall, an artistic director of Ensemble Free Theater Norway. Organisers aim to “increase awareness about contemporary Belarus through culture, storytelling, and theater”.

“Hopefully, these new plays of Belarusian Dream Theater can inspire more people to take action, to create, and to speak up against censorship everywhere,” the organisers say. The project Belarusian Dream Theater was inspired by McCall´s personal and professional experiences. Three years ago, he collaborated with the Belarus Free Theatre, the group that, having no opportunities to work at home legally, has to perform abroad and show plays secretly in Belarus.

McCall volunteered with Amnesty International and the Norwegian Helsinki Committee to support the freedom of speech in Belarus after the events of December 19, 2010, when peaceful protests in Minsk were brutally suppressed by the authorities.
