At least ’14 dead’ as fresh deadly blast rocks Volgograd

269

A second deadly blast in two days has struck the southern Russian city of Volgograd.

There are conflicting reports over how many have been killed. Russian officials initially said at least 11 died, before revising this up to 14.

It comes after Sunday’s suicide bomb attack on the city’s train station, which has now claimed 17 lives, Euronews reports.

The bombings come as the country prepares for the Winter Olympics.

President Vladimir Putin has put Russia on high alert. However, insurgents have vowed to prevent the 2014 Games in Sochi from going ahead.

In the latest attack, police and ambulances reportedly arrived quickly on the scene as emergency services treated the wounded.

The bus is a shell of its former self; its roof was blown off and debris strewn around the street.

Federal investigators in Russia are calling the attack a “terrorist act.”
