MP proposes to cancel free education

Member of parliament Sviatlana Shylava wants to cancel free higher education in Belarus.

Financing from the state budget should be replaced by a system of state subsidies in higher education. This statement was made by Sviatlana Shylava, the deputy head of the standing committee on healthcare, physical culture, family and youth policy, in the “house of representatives” on December 4, BelTA news agency informs.

“The state will reserve places for students on the faculties it wants. A student who chooses the reserved place is given an interest-free loan, which will be paid by the state after he or she works a compulsory period at the required work after graduation,” Sviatlana Shylava exlained.

If the student is expelled or doesn't work for the full compulsory period, he should pay the loan from his own funds, the MP thinks.

All universities will be given equal conditions and allowed to work on a self-supporting basis. This step will strengthen the higher education system, the MP thinks.
