Lukashenka appoints new ambassadors to Poland and Lithuania

Alyaksandr Lukashenka on December 3 appointed Alyaksandr Averyanaw to succeed Viktar Haysyonak as ambassador to Poland.

And he assigned Alyaksandr Karol to serve as ambassador to Lithuania instead of Uladzimir Drazhyn.

Prior to the appointments, Mr. Averyanaw was director of the foreign ministry’s External Economic Activity Department and Mr. Karol was consul general in Poland’s Gdansk.

The Belarusian leader also appointed Syarhey Mikhnevch, formerly head of a division at the foreign ministry’s External Economic Activity Department, to serve as consul general in Gdansk.

Poland and Lithuania are “our neighbor countries, no matter what relations we have with them today,” Mr. Lukashenka told the newly appointed ambassadors, according to the presidential press office. “We have long said – and this is not our original idea – that you can’t choose your neighbors. Whatever they may be, we have to try to take a positive approach and seek contact with them. We should cooperate with them. God is our witness that we have acted this way. This is our policy. It’s beyond our control that sometimes we don’t succeed. The demands they impose on us are, so to say, too inadequate. We can’t accept them, at least not today. And I don’t think we’ll be able to accept them tomorrow or the day after tomorrow.”
