Maltsev: Demarcation of Belarus-Ukraine border can take up to 7 years

The demarcation of the Belarusian-Ukrainian border can take up to 7 years, Chairman of the Belarusian State Border Committee Leonid Maltsev told reporters.

"It will take up to seven years," said Leonid Maltsev. He emphasized that three teams are involved in the work on demarcation. He explained that the landscape is complicated. There are a lot of wetlands, the areas contaminated with radionuclides as a result of the Chernobyl accident. There are the places where the road takes you up to Belarus, then to Ukraine and then back to Belarus. Most likely this issue will be resolved through mutual exchange of border areas.

Leonid Maltsev said that nevertheless the work has started, the necessary financial documents signed.

As was reported, the official ceremony to open the first border sign on the border between Belarus and Ukraine was held in Dobrush District on 13 November 2013. It was attended by the heads of the Foreign Ministries of the two countries, border committees, and border oblasts. The Foreign Ministers ceremoniously cut the ribbon, symbolizing the opening of the border post. The heads of the border agencies attached the national emblems to border posts. A commemorative capsule was laid down.
