Byalyatski under pressure to apply for pardon

A political prisoner was deprived of visits for six months.

The information was confirmed on February 13 by the administration of penal colony No. 2 in Babruisk, where the political prisoner servers his term.

The head of Viasna human rights centre was denied one of three short-term visits and one of two long-term visits in 2012. Ales Byalyatski was told on February 5 he wouldn't have a long-term meeting this year. Earlier, he learnt that a short-term visit was prohibited for him.

Ales Byalyatski can have a visit only in August, Viasna human rights centre reports.

Human rights activists regard the increased pressure on Ales Byalyatski and other political prisoners with the attempts of the authorities to make them apply for a pardon.

It should be reminded that Ales Byalyatski was sentenced to 4.5 years in a medium security penal colony and confiscation of property in November 2011. He was accused of failure to pay taxes on his foreign bank accounts. He spent the money on his accounts on human rights activity. The EU, the US and human rights groups recognised him a political prisoner and demand to release him.
