Political prisoner Alinevich not allowed to study

The prison authorities have not permitted Ihar Alinevich to study at a training school at penal colony No 10 in Navapolatsk for the third year.

Charter97.org learnt it from Valyantina Alinevich, the mother of political prisoner Ihar Alinevich.

“My son has a university degree, but he wants to develop further. In order not to waste time, he tried to get permission to attend the training school in the penal colony. It would be a chance for him to feel like a human being sitting in a warm classroom. The prison authorities denied his application several times for no reasons. It is worth noting that other inmates can study,” the mother of the political prisoner says.

She also stressed that she hadn't received news from Ihar for a long time.

“My son always congratulated me on St Valentine's day, but this year I didn't have a letter from him. Frankly speaking, I worry. We recently had a short-term meeting. I was also allowed to pass a parcel. Prison officers were checking the bag with food and clothes for 90 minutes. Three prison officers with metal detectors tried to find anything forbidden. They even cut sausages into six parts. It seems wild to me. I cannot believe it. It's good that he is allowed to read,” Valyantina Alinevich said.

It should be reminded that judge Zhanna Khvainitskaya from Minsk's Zavadski district court sentenced Ihar Alinevich to 8 years in a medium security penal colony on May 27, 2011. He is in penal colony No. 10 in Navapolatsk. Mikalai Dzyadok, Alyaksandr Frantskevich and he were accused of a holding a procession near the Ministry of Defence, carrying out an attack on Shangri La casino and the detention facility in Akrestin Street, setting fire to the doors of a Belarusbank office and attacking the Russian Embassy.
