Alyaksandr Dzyadok: Business interests impede release of political prisoners

Europe can help to release Belarusian political prisoners, but economic interests create obstacles.

Alyaksandr Dzyadok, the father of political prisoner Mikalai Dzyadok said it to Radio Racyja.

“Money talks. Our nearest and dearest are hostages of the situation,” he thinks. “The Europeans don't care about our children because they want cheap oil and gas, business development and profits. We are concerned about this attitude. We understand how it is important for our children, but only Europe is able to release them.”

It should be reminded that Mikalai Dzyadok, Ihar Alinevich and Alyaksandr Frantskevich were convicted by Minsk's Zavadski district court on May 27, 2011. They were charged with carrying out attacks on buildings and arsons, holding an unsanctioned anti-military procession near the Ministry of Defence in 2009, throwing Molotov cocktails at the Russian Embassy in Minsk and the detention  centre in 2010. Mikalai Dzyadok was sentenced to 4.5 years in a medium security penal colony. He was transferred to prison No. 4 in Mahilou in December 2012.
