Bruce Jackson: Gribauskajte’s attempts to domesticate Lukashenka mistaken

An expert from the USA, the head of the organization Project on Transitional Democracies Bruce Jackson warns the president of Lithuania Dalya Gribauskajte against the attempts to domesticate Lukashenka.

Lithuania’s president Dalya Gribauskajte, trying to receive something from Aliaksandr Lukashenka, made the same mistake that more than one diplomat had already made before, he believes. Bruce Jackson is the head of a non-governmental organization Project on Transitional Democracies and a former member of the US military intelligence.

Assessing the relations of Lithuania and Belarus and Dalya Gribauskajte’s attempts to establish a contact with Lukashneka, Jackson stressed above all in his interview to ru.delfi.lt that no one has yet been able to domesticate the Belarusian ruler.

“Lativans tried, Swedes tried – no one managed. Now Lukashenka is again is a sort of deportation, he is separated from Europe. It is unlikely that they will invited him to the Eastern Partnership Summit”, - he said.

“Would I behave myself this way? Of course, no. One cannot tell the EU member states not to communicate with neighbors if they see their interest there. Yes, I would have said that it would not work, that there would be disappointment and critique. But if there is a desire to take such a risk – go ahead. Lukashenka either deceived or betrayed everyone who tried and they came back with nothing. That is why there less and less people, who want to take this moral risk and talk to the person, who is in essence a European Hugo Chavez. When there are countries that really want to carry out reforms, that really need assistance – Moldova, Georgia  and others, I sincerely do not understand why to waste time on a person not interested in anything that the EU has to offer”, - Jackson said.

According to him, the heads of the states in Belarus’ geographic proximity may not have a choice or they may think they do not, when it is the matter of business, national minorities or diplomats, But poker with Lukashenka is not a kind of game where one can count on winning.

“We must admit that if presidents and prime ministers want to take an initiative, they have such a right, even if they are mistaken. Let us hope that they will try doing that ever less”.
