Author of Hrodnology fired on Shapira’s order

The chairman of Hrodna region’s executive committee took part in a meeting with the professors of the local university on 4 March.
It took place in the framework of the introduction of the new rector Andrei Karol, Belsat TV channel reports. At the meeting Siamion Shapira confessed that he “personally ordered” to fire the historian Andrei Charniakevich. “They wrote a textbook and published it abroad. For whose money?” – the region executive committee’s chairman asked. Shapira mentioned that the former rector Yauhen Rouba lingered with Charniakevich’s dismissal.
Siamion Shapira also shared with the participants the information that he regularly reads KGB reports and knows everything. According to him, “there are 16 people at the university who call on overthrowing the authorities”.
We would remind that Andrei Charniakevich was fired from Hrodna University in September 2012 for alleged “violation of labour discipline”. Charniakevich is one of the authors of the textbook Hrodnology, published by Hrodna Library in Poland. The book acquired a scandalous fame after the Hrodna authorities had started prosecuting its authors.
