Minsk resident beats riot policeman with bucket

A woman with a bucket caused a head injury to a riot police officer trying to defend a young activist.

Charter97.org has learnt it from independent journalist Henadz Barbarych.

“When Yarashevich and I were in the Savetski district police department, we saw policemen questioning a woman who had not participated in the Chernobyl Way rally. She saw how a young activist had been detained in Bahdanovich Street. Men in plain clothes attacked him and knocked him down. He cried for help. The woman decided the young man had been attacked by hooligans and decided to defend him. Having been pushed off, the woman hit a plainclothes policeman in his head with a bucket she was carrying and cut his forehead. The woman was taken to a police department. A criminal case was initiated against her, but policemen let her go free,” the journalist said.

A journalist of charter97.org contacted a press officer of the Savetski district police department to figure out the details, but a representative of police declined to give comments.

“We cannot provide this kind of information on the phone. You need an official report and documents confirming that you belong to registered media,” the press officer said.

It should be reminded that about 10 people were detained during the Chernobyl Way rally in Minsk on April 26. Some of them were released. Some, including journalists Henadz Barbarych, Aliaksandr Yarashevich, European Belarus civil campaign activists Aliaksandr Tarnahurski, Zmitser Charniak, human rights activist Viachaslau Dashkevich, anarchist activist Ihar Trukhanovich who had been beaten brutally, were taken to a detention centre in Akrestin Street.
