Trial on ‘spy case’ will start on 12 June

The date has been set for the trial in Andrej Hajdukou’s case.

According to the relatives of a political prisoner Andrej Hajdukou, the case’s consideration will take place on 12 June at 10.00 in Viciebsk regional court. A judge Halina Ubarevich has been appointed for the trial.

Yesterday the chairman of KGB Valer Vakulchyk claimed that the court’s proceedings would be held in secretive regime. However there still has been no court’s decision on that, the human rights center Viasna reports.

The human rights center Viasna and Belarusian Helsinki Committee made a joint statement calling upon respective agencies to ensure an open trial proceeding. The activist’s mother also insists that the trial be open.

We would remind that the materials of the criminal case against Hajdukou have been sent to Viciebsk regional court.

According to official information, Andrej Hajdukou was detained “when putting information of interest for foreign special services in a hiding place”. This accusation is considered absurd by many, The European Belarus civic campaign put forward a statement saying that the activist had been detained for disseminating Charter’97 newspapers.

Human rights activists link the persecution of Hajdukou to his oppositional views and explain it as an attempt to intimidate youth activists.
