EU Council: Decision on Makej may be reconsidered

This will happen, if the goal of the suspension of the sanctions is not reached.

European Union’s visa sanctions against Uladzimir Makej have been only suspended while he takes the position of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus. It is said so in the EU Council’s decision, published on 25 June on EUR-Lex.

The document says that the decision may be reconsidered, if the EU Council believes that the goals, for which it has been taken, are not reached.

We would remind that yesterday the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus was temporarily excluded from the list of people, for whom the entrance to the EU’s territory is forbidden. Such a decision was taken at a meeting of the Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the EU in Luxembourg with the purpose of “facilitating diplomatic contacts”. At the same time it is highlighted that Makej remains in the list of people, to whom other restrictive measures apply.

The head of the Belarusian MFA, who is portrayed by some as the main “liberal” among Belarusian officials, - comes from special services and played one of the key roles in the provocation of the 19 December 2010, as well as in further ones. If before the 2006 elections the KGB chairman Sciapan Sukharenka intimidated the Belarusians, who protested against falsifications, then in 2010 it was the head of Lukashenka’s administration Makej, who frightened protesters with terroristic acts in 2010.
