Marek Bucko: Russian aviation base bears direct threat to Poland

The planes that will be located near Lida will be able to conduct combat operations against Lithuania and Poland.

This is how the deputy head of Polish foundation “Freedom and Democracy”, former first secretary of Polish embassy in Minsk Marek Bucko commented for the charter97.org on the deployment of a Russian aviation base in Lida.

“This is not the first time that there will be an aviation base in Lida. I would remind that in the interwar period there was a big Polish aviation base there. But speaking more seriously, I should say that this causes big concern with Polish and Lithuanian authorities, because a Russian military base is a direct threat to our security. It is clear that these planes are able of conducting combat operations against Lithuania and Poland. And this fact, of course, is a source of direct pressure, first of all psychological”, - the politician is convinced.

He believes that this fits into joint military actions of Belarus and Russia.

“Their main reason is that Russia always acted this way, when it had economic difficulties. The thing is that Gazprom’s value is decreasing now, and it is the main source of Russia budget’s income. The energy monopoly is falling apart, and the prices for energy resources are dropping in world markets. All this causes difficulties for the Russian budget. In such moments, like in the times of the Soviet Union, Russia would start press and intimidate the West politically with its military power. This is, unfortunately, a part of Russian imperial policy, - Marek Bucko emphasized.

We would remind that a Russian aviation base will start functioning in Belarus already this year. It will be based in Lida not far from the borders with Lithuania and Poland.

For the first time the issue of deploying a Russian aviation base in our country was raised in April 2013. The Minister of Defense of Russia Sergei Shoigu stated that during his visit to Minsk. He said that the first flight of fighter jets would arrive to Belarus already this year. It was also reported that Moscow was planning on supplying Minsk with another 4 divisions of long range surface-to-air missile systems S-300 in 2013.
