Viktar Ivashkievich: UN Council’s report annoys dictator

The discussion of human rights violations in Belarus at the international level is very important.

Such an opinion was expressed to the charter97.org web-site by a coordinator of the European Belarus civic campaign Viktar Ivashkievich, when he commented on the report on Belarus, prepared by the special reporter of the UN Human Rights Council Miklós Haraszti, and also the demand of the Socialist International to release Belarusian political prisoners.

“Discussion of human rights violation in Belarus at any international level, naturally, is useful for democracy in our country, because it creates a situation, when people realize that such a problem exists. And it is a different question, how actively they look for the ways of solving it. In the end, it will give a result at the critical moment”, - the politician believes.

He emphasized that official Minsk wants that there were no such procedures at all.

“But on the other hand, for so many years of his rule Lukashenka has got used to the kaleidoscopic rotation of European politicians, who all do the same, and he is quite indifferent to all their statements. They in no way affect the actions of the Belarusian ruler. Or course, it annoys Belarusian authorities, but insignificantly. Yes, it is unpleasant, would have been better if there had been no such statements, but even if there are, they do not care. The regime is convinced, at it has been proven in practice, that economic interest of Europe are much more important than the declared human rights”, - Viktar Ivashkievich is convinced.
