Anatol Liabedzka: Paleckis should learn from Haraszti

The report by the Special Rapporteur of the UN Human Rights Council is objective givinga true picture of the Belarusian situation.

Anatol Liabedzka, the chairman of the United Civil Party (UCP), spoke to charter97.org about the report by the Council's Special Rapporteur Miklós Haraszti.

“As for personality of the rapporteur, I think Haraszti is a person in his place. He is not biased. He examined the Belarusian situation in details, though he was not allowed to visit the country. I met with him in Vienna and he left a positive impression on me, because he didn't want just to receive information, he wanted to know details and particular things. This is Harasziti's strong point,” the politician noted.

He thinks the report is rather objective reflecting the reality.

“If there were no positive changes last year, why should they appear this year? It is a professional work. The difference between this report and Justas Paleckis's report is that Haraszti didn't find improvements noticed by the MEP. It is my personal opinion, but I think Haraszti reflects reality more accurately. Belarusian media show their interest in the report. The Belarusian authorities reacts nervously,” the UCP leader said.

He added that the scandalous report by Paleckis drew attention to Belarus.

“I don't know what aims he had, but his report caused a wide discussion and provoked interest in Belarus. If the report were not so sleek and polished, most people wouldn't notice it. It made many European politicians read it and express their position on the problem,” Anatol Liabedzka is sure.
