Driver killed during police chase in Shumilina

No violations were found in the actions of the road police.

At about 11 p.m. on June 28, a 41-year-old resident of the Polatsk district was driving his Renault Laguna on the highway Vitesbk-Polatsk. He repeated ignored police's orders to stop and continued moving in the direction of Shumilina at a speed of more than 160km/h, the press service of the police department of the Vitebsk regional executive committee reports.

The police started a chase. Residents of Shumilina gathered for a village festival, so the police took a decision to block the road.

A DAF truck with a semi-trailer was used as a roadblock on the intersection of Lunacharsky and Ybileynaya Streets. Police cars with emergency lighting were standing on both sides of the road illuminating the truck with the low beams.

The Renault Laguna driver didn't stop and crashed into the semi-trailer. He died in the ambulance on the way to hospital, the police department press service informs.

The Investigation Committee initiated a criminal case over part 2 of article 317 of the Criminal Code (violating the road rules or the rules of vehicle operation resulting in death or grievous bodily harm by negligence).

After carrying out preliminary investigative operations, investigators have reasonable grounds to suppose that actions by road police officers don't violate the acting legislation and internal instructions, says the press release of the police department of the Vitesbk regional executive committee.
