A number of members of the Polish Sejm want to cooperate with official Minsk

A group on contacts and cooperation with Belarus has been created in the Polish parliament. The group is led by MP Eugeniusz Czykwin, who says about the necessity to develop relations with the Belarusian authorities.

Belarus's Ambassador to Poland Viktar Haisionak attended the group's first meeting yesterday, the press service of the MFA reports. He marked the importance of bilateral relations development in all spheres, including in the political and interparliamentary dimensions.

The group head expressed his interest in “establishing a dialogue with Belarus, cooperation in economic and cultural sectors and the development of trans-border cooperation”.

“It is yet another group to support the regime of Lukashenka,” Vital Rymasheuski, a co-head of the orgaisning committee to open the Belarusian Christian Democracy party, said to charter97.org. “I am confident that it won't have any influence and will remain a marginal group. Polish society has immunity both against dictatorships and cynical policy of loyalty to authoritarian regimes. More honest and adequate people will be in charge of relations with Belarus.

The fact that such a group was created openly is a consequence of the EU's current policy. It was impossible some time ago. It was a shame to call openly for cooperation with the Belarusian regime.”

The parliamentary group plans to hold another meeting in September to discuss proposals of MPs on development a dialogue with Belarus. The group includes 11 MPs from left parties.
