Slap in the face for Putin

Lukashenka’s absence in Kiev is a personal slap in the face for Vladimir Putin.

A Ukrainian political scientist Volodymir Cybulko said that in a commentary to Gazeta.ua.

He also noted that recent statements by Vladimir Putin show that there is no vision of further relations with Ukraine.

“Putin’s behavious shows that Ukraine is a long-term ideological manger for domestic consumption by Russians. The very imperial idea – to take up, to absorb – is being proclaimed now very carefully, because, god forbid, it gets taken up and absorbed. Then the Ukrainian people’s craving for freedom would spread on the Russian population, and Russia would explode. Russian establishment knows that very well, that is why it fear with freedom virus”, - he noted.

The expert reminded that there is an opinion that Putin is doing everything possible in order to pull Ukraine into the Customs Union.

“Actually, he understands, that he would not be able to swallow this nut. He realized that the sooner Ukraine closes in with the European Union, the sooner Russian will fall economically. He says that the Ukrainian economy can get competitive advantages only having united with the Russian one. In reality, it is Russia that wins from that, not Ukraine. Only Russians got benefits from the creation of the Customs Union. Belarus and Kazakhstan are operating with losses. Lukashenka did not come for the celebrations in Kiev, because he feared that he would be exemplified: Belarus has gained something from the Customs Union, and he would lack strength and potential to publicly object that. If he starts doing that, he will lose even more. It does not matter how the Russian president behaved in Kiev, Lukashenka’s absence at the celebrations is a personal slap in the face for Putin”, - Cybulko noted.

According to him, Russia perfectly understands that its domestic problems “tie his hands”.

“The perspective of a decline in the oil market puts forward ever tough conditions for its existence. Russian is 65% dependent on oil and gas prices. The main issue today is not the absorption of new lands, but the maintenance of the actual ones. Russia has been pushed into Asia. It turns more and more into an Asian country – it is a regional leader there. But the Russian leadership is politically experienced. Ever more threatening statements and declarations will be made. Their main task will be not so much to frighten Ukraine, as to try to unite its population over the idea that there are enemies all around their country, to create an image of a sieged fortress in the need of being protected”, - the political scientist explained.

We would remind that in the end the Belarusian ruler did not show up in Ukraine at the celebration of the 1025th anniversary of the adoption of Christianity in Kievan Rus. Originally it had been reported that Lukashenka would come to the Ukrainian capital together with his son Kolia.
