Belarusian veterans of Afghan War demand to return preferences

Former international soldiers and veterans of the Soviet War in Afghanistan call on the government to restore their social preferences and guarantees.

A relative appeal was sent to prime minister Mikhail Miasnikovich by co-chairs of the republican public association of veterans of the Soviet War in Afghanistan “Defenders of Motherland” Aliaksandr Kamarouski and Aleh Vouchak, BelaPAN news agency reports.

The authors remind about the privileges that international soldiers had had until a number of legislative acts were adopted in 2008. The privileges included free medicines, free making and repairing dentures, priorities for receiving vouchers for health resorts and centres, the right to free use of public transport, priority for receiving home construction loans on preferential rates, etc.

Participants of the Soviet War in Afghanistan call on the government to restore these privileges, because the abolition of preferences “stays in conflict with the CIS agreements on mutual recognition of preferences and guarantees and the law on veterans of the Republic of Belarus”.

The authors of the appeal turn attention to the presidential soon-to-be-released decree “On certain state social guarantees for the military, rank-and-file personnel and senior officers of internal affairs bodies, agencies of financial investigations, agencies and units of emergencies, veterans of military actions in foreign states and their family members”. The document “will lower the status of people involved in military actions,” they say.
