Martin Uggla: I don’t envy Ice Hockey World Championship’s insurer

A boycott or cancellation of the Ice Hockey World Championship in Minsk will be a hard blow to the Lukashenka regime.

This is how the head of a Swedish human rights organization Östgruppen Martin Uggla commented for the charter97.org web-site on the measures taken by the Belarusian authorities, who insured from the possible losses in the case the even gets boycotted.

“This shows that Lukashenka is afraid of a boycott as of fire. The Belarusian dictator realized that a cancellation or relocation of the World Championship are real. The resolution, taken by the European Parliament is a fairly serious step in that direction. Of course, the final decision will be taken by national federations and International Ice Hockey Federation, but this is an important signal and shows that the issue of the event’s boycott is still urgent”, - the human rights activist believes.

He added that the World Championship is very important for Lukashenka in terms of prestige.

“If it gets cancelled, this will be a catastrophe for the Belarusian ruler. Lukashenka is going to build PR with the help of this event, and its cancellation will be a hard blow to the Belarusian regime. The measures, taken by the authorities to insure the World Championship, show that the blow will not only be physiological, but also economic. I am very curios, what is the insurance amount, and I do not envy the company that will compensate for such losses”, - Martin Uggla concluded.

We would remind that Lukashenka obliged the World Championship’s organizers to insure against losses in case the events gets boycotted or rescheduled.
