Raman Yakauleuski: Baumgertner's fate to be determined today

Putin's visit will solve the problem of Uralkali and the company's CEO will return home.

Political observer Raman Yakauleuski talked to charter97.org about the meeting of Vladimir Putin and Aliaksandr Lukashenka during the military exercises Zapad 2013.

“The fate of Vladislav Baumgertner is being determined. We see gradual steps, but the process is not as quick as some people forecast. It will be solved during the meeting between Lukashenka and Putin. No one knew if Putin would visit Belarus, but now we know that they will meet at the firing range and the issue will be solved. It won't be made quickly, because it would look like applying pressure. Baumgertner is not in jail, but in a flat already. By the way, I don't insist there's any relation, but there was a sharp increase in rental prices in Minsk lately. Someone probably knew it,” Raman Yakauleski said ironically.

He stresses it looks funny that the investigation seems to be completed in the middle of the night and pretrial restriction for Uralkali CEO were changed.

“It is just outer covering. We know that everything depends on one person. By the way, Uralkali shares go up today that is directly connected with today's events. All of us are observers and hostages of one person. I'd like to remind that Putin said not to make noise and solve the problem quietly. We see that it is being solved for Baumgertner. Of course, a flat is not a jail, but the problem has not been solved yet. I don't know who comes next, but I suppose everything end with Putin's visit. Baumgertner will soon leave the rented flat and go home,” the political observer thinks.

He says it's possible that the two heads of state will discuss other issues besides the Uralkali problem.

“Taking into account that the meeting will be held in military conditions, they are likely to speak about a Russian military base in Belarus. And maybe not one military base, as some say. There are many questions. We see how they can arise suddenly in different areas. Taking into account the political systems of the two countries, especially Belarus, it is one person, who decides everything: Putin there and Lukashenka here. We see that the mutual relations are far from being friendly. I'd like to remind about the suspicions that Uralkali is not the last business entity that has problems in Belarus. Maybe Putin will hear amid the thunder of cannons that we can hit other businesses too,” Raman Yakauyleuski summed up.

We remind that Putin and Lukashenka are expected to inspect the last phase of the Russian-Belarusian strategic military exercises Zapad 2013. The spokesman for the Russian president said the issue of Uralkali would be discussed. The flight of the Russian president to Hrodna was delayed due to bad weather.
