Post-election protester Malchanaw barred from moving to Minsk

Former political prisoner Alyaksandr Malchanaw has been unable to find a job in his home city of Barysaw but has been barred by the police from moving to Minsk.

Mr. Malchanaw, 25, is under “preventive police supervision” and has to receive the police’s permission before moving to another locality.

In an interview with the Belarusian service of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, the young man said that he had been offered a job and accommodation in Minsk, but the Belarusian capital’s police had failed to reply to his application for permission to move to the city for more than a month.

“I have been out of work for more than three months,” he was quoted as saying.

Mr. Malchanaw was one of the 28 people who were sentenced to prison terms in connection with their participation in a post-election protest staged in Minsk on the night of December 19, 2010. He was arrested in Barysaw on January 6, 2011 and ultimately found guilty of participation in mass disturbances and sentenced to three years in prison. He was freed on September 14, 2011 on Alyaksandr Lukashenka's pardon.

The man struggled to find a job after his release and later served an 18-month prison term for stealing $54 worth of scrap metal.
