Opposition activist from Haradok detained after anonymous complaint

The police department of the town of Haradok received a letter saying that opposition activist Leanid Autukhou was preparing a protest action.

The letter was signed as “Anonym”, Viasna human rights centre reports.

The BPF party member spent three hours at a police department until the region's top officials left. The officials came to meet with discontented local market traders.

Leanid Autukhou explains the detention with the visit of the officials from the Vitebsk regional executive committee.

“We have an acute problem – the market in the centre of Haradok was closed. Market traders were offered a stadium near a vocational school, but it is a very dirty place without electricity, water and a fence. They don't want to move there and work in dirt. Market traders sent a complaint to the district executive committee on January 8. About 80 people were left without job at the beginning of the month. I talked to them near the district executive committee. They said they didn't want to add politics to their problems and asked me to go away. So I went away. Today, January 9, I took my car to meet with the journalists, who wanted to learn more about the problem of the market and market traders. I was stopped on the way for no reasons. Policemen showed me a letter from an anonymous author,” he said.

The market in Haradok was closed to prepare the town for the 2014 Dazhynky harvest festival. Autukhou doesn't know who wrote the letter. He thinks the author may have links with the police, because representatives of the regional authorities planned to visit Haradok on January 9.
