Yury Khashchavatski: “Elections” in Belarus resemble an old joke

Taking part in “elections” is disrespect for yourself.

Famous Belarusian film director Yury Khashchavatski said it in an interview with charter97.org.

“I regard the 'elections' in Belarus like life on Mars. I take it well, but is there life? I have the same feeling about elections that don't exist in Belarus,” he said.

The director notes he supports the politicians running in the local elections only if they withdraw like in 2012.

“Running in the farce called 'elections' means disrespect for yourself. By the way, I'd like to tell voters: Don't go to election. The authorities will draw the necessary figures without your votes,” Yury Khashchavatski said.

The director is confident the only possible way out is a boycott.

“It's like an old joke: besides that they ordered us to hang ourselves, they said to bring our own rope. Don't bring the rope, don't vote,” Yury Khashchavatski said.

Since 1995, none “elections” and referendums in Belarus have been recognised by the organisations entitled by the international community to observe and assess elections.
