New Zealand singer Lorde wins two Grammys

NEW Zealand's 17-year-old pop sensation Lorde picked up two Grammy awards for her song Royals, while French Duo Daft Punk won the music industry's major prizes.

Lorde won song of the year and best pop solo performer for her hit Royals at the annual ceremony in Los Angeles, heaustralian.com.au reports.

Daft Punk and Pharrell Williams didn't only get lucky - they won in every category they were nominated in, including the coveted album of the year and record of the year for the funk-electronic anthem "Get Lucky."

"Back when I was drinking and using, I used to imagine things that weren't there that were frightening. And then I got sober and two robots called me and asked me to make an album," said producer Paul Williams, who stood onstage with Daft Punk, who sported their signature helmets.

Lorde beat out Justin Timberlake, Katy Perry and Bruno Mars to claim best solo performance, and thanked her rivals during her acceptance speech.

"This is the one thing that I did not expect the most about tonight,'' Lorde said.

"I have been so inspired by all of your vocal work at some point in my life, so thank you,'' she said of her rivals.

Lorde, whose real name is Ella Yelich-O'Connor, stormed through international charts last year with Royals, her genre-defying tale of aspirational luxury. With the song, Lorde became the first act from New Zealand to top the Billboard chart in the US.
