40 famous Belarusians condemned metropolitan Pavel’s appointment

In their address to the nation representatives of Belarusian community spoke against the appointment of metropolitan Pavel as the head of Belarusian Orthodox Church.

According to the authors of the address, Moscow completely ignored the interests of the people, Belarusian Orthodox Church and even the authorities of Belarus, who wanted for a representative of Belarusian clergy to become the Patriarchic Exarch, Radio Svaboda reports.

The statement’s authors link the appointment of metropolitan Pavel to the Russian loan.

- Exarch Pavel is not a citizen of Belarus and does not speak the national language, which blatantly violates the legislation. But what only cannot be done for the sake of retaining power.

Now we may avoid a default, but at the expense of spiritual slavery, denationalization of Belarus, losing our sovereignty and national peculiarity – language, culture, genuine history and our own ecclesiastical architecture, - the statement reads.

Among the signatories are artists Hienadz Drazdou, Alaksiej Marachkin and Ales Cirkunou, a historian Ihar Kuzniacou and a linguist Lavon Barshcheuski.

We would remind that the synod of Russian Orthodox Church on 25 December 2013 appointed Razan and Mikhailovo metropolitan Pavel the head of Belarusian Orthodox Church.
