Syrian President’s cousin has fled to Belarus together with the family.

It is reported by Middle Eastern mass media, a journalist of charter97.org informs.

Brigadier General Hafez Makhlouf, a maternal cousin of the President Bashar al-Asad, until recently head of the General Security Directorate's Damascus branch (GSD). On September 9 he was dismissed after “an argument” with Asad and his entourage.

Hafez Makhlouf is not only a close relative of Syrian president, but also a brother of Rami Makhlouf, who is the richest man in Syria and “the moneyman” for the regime. The US and EU sanctions are currently in force against the brothers.

Joshua Landis, a Syria expert, was among the first to inform about the escape of the influential Syrian official and businessman. In his microblog he wrote that brothers Hafez and Ikhab Makhlouf deleted the picture of Bashar al-Asad from Facebook profiles and WhatsApp, and Hafez fled Syria.

postskriptum.org news source offers a version that Hafez Makhlouf planned to move to Russia, where his father, a 80-year-old Mukhammed Makhlouf has a permanent domicile, but Russia didn’t issue a visa for him, so he had to choose Belarus.

Opposition charges Makhlouf with numerous military crimes, including use of chemical weapons in Eastern Guta last year. In July 2012 mass media informed about the death of Hafez Makhlouf, however it turned out that he was just injured.
