Lukashenka proposed Kuchma to hold referendum “like in Belarus”

The dictator proposed the second president of Ukraine to amend the Constitution on the example of Belarus, but he refused.

Lukashenka said it at a press conference for the Russian media in Minsk on October 17, BelaPAN reports.

“Ukraine needs strong power. The country needs a president with as broad presidential powers as possible,” Lukashenka thinks.

He recalled that presidential powers were restricted in Belarus when he took office in 1994. “Anyone could manipulate the president,” he noted. According to Lukashenka, after the “referendum” in 1996, when most people allegedly voted for the amendments to the Constitution, he made the Supreme Council ratify the document. “I said to the Supreme Council: If you don't ratify it, I will dissolve you on behalf of the people.”

Belarus, Lukashenka claims, offered Kuchma help in preparing a new constitution. “Most Ukrainians supported the Constitution, but the ratification by the Verkhovna Rada was needed. Kuchma didn't do it. He explained that the Rada would not support it,” Lukashenka said. “It was the beginning. People, the Rada and the president, all began to live on their own,” the Belarusian ruler thinks.

None “elections” and “referendums” held in Belarus by the dictator were recognised by international organisations and western countries due to frauds.
