Ales Bialiatski met with head of Swedish Foreign Ministry

Human rights activists and the former political prisoner have urged the government of Sweden not to change their position toward the Belarusian authorities.

During the working visit to Sweden, on October 23 the chairman of “Viasna” human rights centre and Vice President of the International Federation for Human Rights Ales Bialiatski had a meeting with Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallström. “Viasna” called the human rights activist on the phone, in order to listen to his first-hand impressions about the high-profile meeting.

“Today I had a meeting with Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallström. In a free and informal atmosphere I shared my thoughts and observations about the internal situation in Belarus. During the conversation we also discussed some aspects concerning Belarusian-Russian-Ukrainian relations.”

Ales Bialiatski urged the government of Sweden not to change their attitude towards Belarusian authorities, and as before to demand release of political prisoners, as well as to render support to the civil society in Belarus.

Margot Wallström was sincerely interested in opinions of the human rights activist about the today’s situation in Belarus. In the end of the meeting the politician confirmed that the position of Sweden towards Belarus is to remain principled and steadfast.
