The military jets are to be stationed there as early as in 2015.

Such a statement has been made by Russian Defence Minister, Army General Sergey Shoigu, “Interfax” informs.

“Next year we will deploy 12 combat aircraft Su-27 and two training aircraft Su-27 in addition to a fleet of four Mi-8 helicopters at the airfield in Bobruisk. It is support aviation,” he said during the session of the joint board of the defence ministries of Belarus and Russia.

Sergey Shoigu also said that at the session of the board the key approaches to preparation and carrying out the joint Russian-Belarusian operational exercise “Union’s Shield-2015” (“Shchit Soyuza-2015”) were approved.

Earlier it was informed that an airfield of Russia is to be located in Babrujsk, Belarus, in 2016. Many citizens of the country disagree with that, as they fear that such a close cooperation with Moscow could result in dependence on the Kremlin.

The plans concerning an air base in Belarus had been harboured by the Russian authorities for quite a long time. Thus, in April 2013 Shoiu stated that in 2015 an entire aviation regiment would be created at the territory of Belarus, and it would patrol the borders of the both states. At the same time the minister in his conversation with Lukashenka announced that the first flight of fighter planes is to appear at the territory of the country in 2013.

Later, due to the situation in Ukraine and the NATO activities, Minsk offered to “ferry” Russian planes to its territory. As a result, 6 Russian fighter planes Su-27 and three military-transport planes have flown to the airfield “Babrujsk”.
