Burkino Faso’s President Compaore resigns

Burkina Faso’s national radio says President Blaise Compaore has resigned.

His decision comes a day after the opposition called supporters onto the streets in an attempt to remove him from power.

In his statement, he called for elections within 90 days, Euronews reports.

On Thursday, the country was put under a state of an emergency after parliament and several other government buildings were torched.

Anger erupted when Compaore, who’s been in power for 27 years, attempted to amend the constitution to extend his tenure.

Tens of thousands of people have been buoyed by opposition calls for Compaore to resign.

The military dissolved parliament and announced a transitional government.

Tensions have been building for several months in the former French colony, one of West Africa’s poorest economies.

Amid looting and the ransacking of several politicians homes, the opposition had called on protesters to keep up the pressure on Compaore by occupying public spaces.
