Activist from Kobryn accused of “uprising”

Activist Aliaksandr Mekh was invited to a police station in Kobryn.

Police officer Anatoli Tarasiuk said on the phone that an administrative case was opened against Anatoli Tarasiuk as a “participant of the uprising in Svislach”. The reason is perhaps the event in the town of Svislach that was held on October 26. The activist jokes he is too young to be a participant of January Uprising led by Kastus Kalinouski, but says he understands why he was invited to the police station, Radio Racyja reports.

“I visit Svislach annually for the last six years to pay tribute to Kastus Kalinouski and participants of the uprising. I visit the town in the company of other people from the Brest region. We support the people who organise the meeting as well as the Belarusian spirit and history. We pay our respect to our ancestors and those who struggled for our and your freedom.

If the authorities decided to punish people for paying tribute to the ancestors for six years, it demonstrates their anti-national and anti-Belarusian moods,” Ales Mekh thinks.

The activist waits for an official summons.
