Andrei Klimau: I doubt mental abilities of those participating in elections

The opposition politician thinks it is crazy to take part in the forthcoming elections.

Andrei Klimau, a former businessman and MP who served three jail terms for political reasons, talked to BelGazeta about the upcoming “electoral campaign”.

“I have serious doubts about mental abilities of those who said they would participate in the presidential elections next year. I don't want to think that these people are traitors or just want to earn on the campaign. I prefer to think they are not clever. How is it possible to speak about elections in Belarus? The government plans to spend Br100 billion on the campaign. What for? To beat young people in streets? To jail them?

I understand candidates to some extent. Some have ambitions, some have business. But why do ordinary people believe something can change for better? The government had better give this money to pensioners to help them buy medicines. Elections in our country should be cancelled. They are useless,” he said.

Andrei Klimau underlines that voters haven't influenced any elections in Belarus since 1996.

“My opinion is unambiguous: decent people should not take part in the election. If they want to formally express their position with Yarmoshyna, they have Haidukeich and others for that. Take one million rubles, print portraits and declare the results. 100 dollars is enough for that,” he said.
