Belarus football team wrap up season with win over Mexico

The Belarusian national football team finished the season on a good note claiming a 3-2 win in friendly against Mexico on 18 November.

Belarus held its last match in the season following a 0-3 defeat in Spain as part of the Euro 2016 qualification, while Mexico arrived in Belarus after their 3-2 victory over the Dutch, BelTA has learned.

In the first half both the teams sought moments to score and the goalies stood high. The teams produced a series of four goals right after the break with Mexico taking the lead twice. Belarusian footballers continued to build up pressure which culminated in Pavel Nekhaichik's winner at the 81st minute.

The Belarusian national football team started the season under coach Georgy Kondratyev who resigned following the team's bad start in the Euro 2016 qualifying tournament. In Group C the Belarusians played in a draw (1-1) in Luxemburg and suffered three defeats in a row: 0-2 against Ukraine, 1-3 against Slovakia and 0-3 against Spain. Andrei Zygmantovich, Georgy Kondratyev's assistant, coached the team during the match against Spain.

This season the Belarusian national football team held nine matches, posting three wins, playing twice in a draw and recording five defeats.

Belarus will hold its next match in the Euro 2016 qualifying against Macedonia on 27 March. Group C standings are as follows: Slovakia – 12 points, Spain – 9, Ukraine – 9, Macedonia – 3, Belarus – 1, Luxemburg – 1.
