Yelena Tonkacheva to be deported from Belarus for 3 years

The human rights defender will be deported from the country within a month.

Belarusian law-enforcement bodies took a decision to deport human rights defender Yelena Tonkacheva without the right to return to Belarus for three years. She must leave Belarus within a month.

She now undergoes the fingerprinting procedure at Minsk's Pershamaiski district police department, Radio Svaboda reports.

Yelena Tonkacheva, a famous human rights defender and head of the Centre for Legal Transformation Lawtrend, was informed on October 30 that her residence permit in Belarus was annulled. The formal reason was an administrative sanction for a speeding offence.

Yelena Tonkacheva is a citizen of Russia living in Belarus for 30 years.

The decision on the deportation was considered on October 5. More than 7,000 people sent appeals to the relative bodies asking not to expel Tonkacheva from Belarus. Fifty people came to the building of the Pershamaiski district police department to support the activist.
