Polish defence minister: Belarus may be next victim of Putin

Lukashenka has grounds to fear Russia's aggression.

Ukraine will join NATO and the European Union after the implementation of the required standards and getting approval of citizens of Ukraine, Polish minister of defence Tomasz Siemoniak said to Radio Zet, Evropeiska Pravda reports.

“President Poroshenko's declaration on cancelling the non-bloc status is very important. I think it was the first step. We will see the time when Ukraine will be a NATO member,” the minister think.

He emphasised that NATO should be open for new members and Ukraine in particular.

“Ukraine should fulfill the standards and Ukrainian society should prepare itself for joining NATO. No one in the world has the right to block this process. I think it is an inevitable process. Ukraine will join NATO and the European Union,” Siemoniak said.

The Polish minister praised the role of Minsk at the talks aimed at finding a solution to the Ukrainian crisis, but he thinks it is too early to speak about the Euro-Atlantic integration of Belarus, because the problem of democracy and human rights still remains unsolved.

“Lukashenka sees the direction of Putin's policy. Such countries as Kazakhstan and Belarus have grounds to fear that they may become the next victims [of Russia] after Ukraine,” the minister of defence of Poland said.
