Sergei Lavrov: Belarus can join Russia's sanctions against EU

The rules and regulations of the Customs Union allow taking such measures.

Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov is sure that Belarus and Kazakhstan will support sanctions against the West if necessary. He said it in an interview with RIA Novosti.

“The rules and regulations of the Customs Union allow its members to impose trade regulations on third parties only if there has been economic pressure from that country towards any one member of the Customs Union,” Sergei Lavrov said.

According to him, Russia does not rule out that the Customs Union will need to take response measures, but the issue is not currently on the agenda.

“Regarding Belarus and Kazakhstan and their compliance with the import ban of EU goods to Russia: In the conditions of a unified market it is quite difficult to rule out dishonest actions by western economic agents, who could profit by smuggling banned goods into Russia. In the meantime, the leaders of Belarus and Kazakhstan assure us that they will prevent such actions,” Lavrov added.

The Russian foreign minister is confident that the sanctions against Russia “open new horizons for augmenting trade possibilities within the Customs Union”.

Customs control over vehicles on the Russian-Belarusian border was lifted in April 2011 after the Customs Union was created. Aliaksandr Lukashenka accused Russia in early December of “indecent behaviour” and called a ban on delivering products from Belarus to Russia a “violation of the rules of the Customs Union”. After that Belarus began to control cargo from Russia on the border.
