Criminal case opened over modernization delay at Vitsyebskdrew

Criminal proceedings have been instituted in connection with delays in the modernization of state-owned woodworking company Vitsyebskdrew.

Prosecutor General Alyaksandr Kanyuk told it reporters in Minsk on Friday, BelaPAN said.

He said that the culprits would be established in the course of the investigation, and so would be the amount of the damage caused by the delays to the state.

The inquiry is currently conducted by prosecutors, said Mr. Kanyuk.

The Prosecutor General's Office will devote more attention to the efficient use of public funds and crack down on the mismanagement of state-owned property, he warned.

The prosecutor general promised that "there will be no witch-hunt."

Speaking at a government conference on January 31, Alyaksandr Lukashenka warned of criminal punishment for the modernization delay.

Mr. Lukashenka suggested assessing the damage caused by the delay and bringing criminal charges against the culprits. "If you need to put someone in a pretrial detention center, do so," he told Mr. Kanyuk at the conference.
