Jailed Ales Bialiatski writes book about repressed writer

Barys Mikulich, a repressed writer, lived in Babruisk, where the political prisoner serves his term.

Natallia Pinchuk, the wife of the arrested human rights defender, says Ales Bialiatski began to collect information about Barys Mikulich in autumn 2013. He now works on an essay, Radio Svaboda reports.

Human rights activist Alena Laptsionak, who helps Ales Bialiatski with his work, received two parts of the essay about Barys Mikulich. She says it was by accident that Ales Bialiatski got interested in the writer.

“Barys Mikulich published his texts in the magazine 'Maladniak' in Babruisk, where Ales serves his term. Secondly, he was imprisoned two times and died after the war some months before the rehabilitation. I sent Ales Barys Mikulich's prison diary titled 'Story about myself'. Ales became interested in the writer, asked to send more information about him and began to write an essay. I think the essay and other works by Ales Bialiatski will be published soon,” Alena Laptsionak said.

Ales Bialiatski was arrested on August 4, 2011. He was found guilty of concealing incomes on a large scale and sentenced to 4.5 years in a medium security correctional colony and confiscation of property. He faced prosecution for his bank accounts in Lithuania and Poland. He used the money on his accounts for human rights activity. Bialiatski serves his sentence in correctional colony No. 2 in Babruisk.
