Belarus People’s Artist Gavriil Vashchenko dies aged 86

People's Artist of Belarus, winner of the State Prize of Belarus Gavriil Vashchenko died aged 86.

The memorial service will be held at the Arts Palace center in Minsk on 15 February, BelTA learned from the Vashchenko Art Gallery.

Gavriil Vashchenko was born on 20 June 1928 in the village of Chkalovichi, Bragin District, Gomel Oblast.

Gavriil Vashchenko made a huge contribution to the establishment and development of the Belarusian school of monumental and decorative art. In 1988, he was awarded the honorary title People's Artist of the BSSR. The International Biographical Center (Cambridge, UK) awarded him the honorary title "Person of the Year 1992" and "Person of the 20th Century". In addition, the American Biographical Institute awarded him the title "Man of the year 1994" and the golden medal. He was awarded a medal of Francysk Skaryna (1995). The artist devoted 45 years of his life to the Belarusian State Academy of Arts, where he founded the department of monumental and decorative art.

Works of Gabriel Vashchenko were exhibited in Austria, Algeria, the UK, Bulgaria, Canada, Denmark, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Romania, France, Germany, Czechoslovakia and other countries. They are on display at the Belarusian National Arts Museum, the Tretyakov Gallery, the National Museum of Ukrainian Art, national art museums of Moldova and Bulgaria.

In 2002, Gomel opened the Vashchenko Art Gallery. The artist gave the city 70 paintings, watercolors and sketches of monumental works. In 2013, Gavriil Vashchenko was awarded the title of honorary citizen of Gomel in recognition of his great personal contribution to the development of fine arts and preservation of the cultural heritage of the city.
