EHU lecturers picketing Lithuanian MFA

About 10 lecturers of the European Humanities University (EHU) are picketing the building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania.

They are holding posters “We are not gastarbeiters”, “Tereshkovich back” and “My rights back”.

The EHU donors' conference takes place in the MFA building on February 18, Radio Svaboda reports.

“They are discussing the issue of additional funding of EHU to continue the reforms by the university administration,” EHU lecturer Maxim Zhbankov said. “It's dangerous to give money to the institution in crisis if it doesn't know how to tackle it. The problem of the system crisis should be addressed in the first turn.”

On February 17, Professor Pavel Tereshkovich, a representative of the democratic platform For a New EHU, was removed from the list of participants of the donors' conference.

The conflict between the university administration and EHU lecturers from the union Platform has been continuing for several months.

On January 13, EHU rector Anatoli Mikhailov signed a decree on announcing an open international competition to fill 17 academic staff vacancies.

Pavel Tereshkovich, the chair of the EHU Senate, doubted the competition procedures would be fair and transparent. The Senate members worry how the competition commission will be formed.

The election to the Senate of the Vilnius-based university was held on November 9. The Senate is a self-governing body. Twelve out of thirteen members of the platform For a New EHU were elected to the Senate. The platform unites academic staff members who don't agree with the university's development plan proposed by the administration.

Professor Pavel Tereshkovich was fired on February 6.

The EHU lecturers called on rector Anatoli Mikhailov to resign on February 6. Vice Rectors Bernardas Gailius and Aliaksandr Kalbaska faced a no-confidence motion from the Senate.

On February 11, the EHU administration released a statement saying it agreed with the demands of lecturers, who want to work under long-term employment agreements.
